Snellville Police Department Receives Grant for Traffic-Calming Program

November 05, 2018

SNELLVILLE, GA. – November 1, 2018 (patch.com) According to an online news report from patch.com, the Snellville Police Department has been awarded a state grant for implementation of a traffic calming program in Snellville, Georgia.*

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety awarded the Snellville Police Department a Highway Safety High Visibility Enforcement Grant in the amount of $7,366 to be used for a traffic-calming program. The program will allow the department to better respond to speed-related incidents and complaints and to try to prevent speed-related traffic accidents.

“Speed-related violations, such as speeding, [driving] too fast for conditions, or following too closely, were contributing factors in over half of our traffic accidents in 2017,” said Snellville Police Lt. David Matson. “Excessive speed not only increases the likelihood you will be involved in a crash, but also increases the likelihood that someone involved in the crash will be injured or killed.”

The department plans to use the money to buy two portable traffic-calming speed signs from Radar, LLC, in Marietta, Georgia. The signs will mount to existing speed limit poles and use built-in radar to display the speeds of passing cars. The signs will also record traffic data to allow officers to identify peak times of speeding violations and to assess the validity of speeding complaints.

“We are grateful to receive this grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety,” said Snellville Police Chief Roy Whitehead. “The equipment we are purchasing through the grant will advance our mission to reduce injury and fatality crashes in our community.”

Uniformed officers might also be used to conduct targeted speed enforcement in areas where the speed signs have indicated there are significant problems. The department is hoping to have the signs in place and running in the middle of November.
