Georgia Students Use Augmented Reality to Experience Dangers of Distracted Driving

About 100 students from Lucy C. Laney High School in Augusta took part in an Augmented Reality Distracted Driving Education Simulator on October 30. The simulation was organized by the PEERS Foundation of Michigan and sponsored by State Farm. Students sat in the driver’s seat of a car and wore augmented reality glasses that displayed the view of a city through the car’s windshield. A PEERS employee then gave the students commands, like “call a friend” or “take a selfie.”
When the students performed the commands, they took their concentration off the road for a few seconds, and most would then be involved in some kind of traffic accident. Joshua Jackson, a PEERS employee, said the majority of students in their simulations do not make it to the end of the 4.5 minute ride.
“We’re trying to show them that accidents don’t happen slowly,” Jackson said. “They happen quickly. When they get into an accident, it’s over before they know it.”
The Georgia Department of Transportation estimates that 70 percent of the fatal traffic accidents that occurred in the state in 2017 were related to unsafe driving behaviors. Jackson said PEERS is part of the mission to reduce those numbers, and the distracted driving simulation is one way they try to educate young drivers.
Upon completion of the simulation, every student received a certificate to remind them to stay off their phones while driving.
