A study from the state of Georgia indicates motorists should not waste their money on these whistles. The study found that the whistles often do not emit the right frequency, do not emit a loud enough sound, or emit no sound at all. Even when the whistles are working as designed, the study found, deer react to them less than 50 percent of the time. Deer usually do not have enough time to react before they hear the whistle or do not perceive the noise as threatening, the researchers said.
Federal safety officials estimate 200 people die every year from collisions with deer, and insurance company State Farm says an average deer collision claim runs more than $4,000. Risk of injury and financial loss are reasons to make every effort to avoid one of these accidents.
Rather than using a deer whistle, follow basic tips to avoid these crashes. These tips include slowing down, using your high beams, educating yourself about deer habits, and braking instead of swerving when you encounter a deer.
