Decatur Residents Pushing for Lower Speed Limit on Candler Street

October 30, 2018

DECATUR, GA. – October 24, 2018 (cbs46.com) Residents in Decatur, Georgia, are pushing for a lower speed limit in Candler Street in response to numerous vehicle accidents in Decatur, Georgia, according to an online news report from cbs46.com.*

The speed limit on Candler Street in Decatur is 35 mph, but residents of the city want that lowered to 30 mph. Numerous accidents occur on the street, residents say, particularly on the stretch between Memorial to College Street. This area is strictly residential and feels like driving through a subdivision, so residents say a lower speed limit just makes sense.

On October 24, residents gathered at the corner of Candler Street and Kirk Road to rally for change. They say they’re planning to continue rallying every week to raise awareness about accidents on the road and to press for action from the city.

“I don’t like having my back to traffic [on Candler Street],” Decatur resident Amanda Marks said at the rally. “I’m always afraid a car is going to jump the curb.”

Tonio Andrade added that the rally attendees would also like to see a general “traffic calming” on the street. Andrade said cars frequently sped down the street and used a painted median as a passing lane.

Decatur Mayor Patti Garrett told reporters that she was aware of the issues presented by residents in the city and that she was working with the Georgia Department of Transportation to make improvements on Candler Street. Georgia DOT confirmed this, releasing a statement to reporters that said, “GDOT is currently working with the City of Decatur to evaluate the requests from the community. Speed studies and [a] Road Safety Audit are in the pipeline. Upon review of those reports, we will better be able to determine, working with the city, what changes or enhancements can be made.”
