Pooler Police Department Receives $13,000 State Grant for Speed Awareness
POOLER, GA. – October 23, 2018 (wtoc.com) According to an online news report from wtoc.com, the Pooler Police Department in Pooler, Georgia, has received a state grant to be used for speed awareness.*
The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety awarded the Pooler Police Department the Highway Safety High Visibility Enforcement Grant, totaling more than $13,000. Police officials say the department applied for the grant and will use the funds to help officers reduce speed-related accidents, as well as accidents caused by distracted driving. The department plans to buy two new speed detection lasers with the money and a large mobile speed trailer that warns drivers about their speed as they pass the trailer.
“Pooler has seen an abundance of growth in population here in the past few years, and with that growth in population has come an increase in crashes and most noticeably, an increase in injury-[causing] crashes,” said Pooler Police Lt. George Tyson. “So that’s what we are trying to get that message out there. So slow down. We want you to get home safely, get to your job safely, and we would rather not see you involved in an accident.”
The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has issued several law enforcement grants this week, including a grant of more than $100,000 to the Savannah Police Department. The Savannah Police Department plans to use the money for its Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic (HEAT) unit.
Since the beginning of 2018, officers with the HEAT unit have issued more than 4,000 citations to drivers in Savannah. Almost 300 of those citations involved driving under the influence stops that led to arrests. The number of DUI crashes has declined in Savannah since the HEAT unit’s inception, Garvin said, so officers hope the grant helps them continue that trend. The unit plans to add two more officers and a sergeant officer.
