Mazda Recalling Vehicles for Airbag Inflator Issues

October 27, 2018

GEORGIA – October 23, 2018 (consumeraffairs.com) According to an online report from consumeraffairs.com, carmaker Mazda North American Operations is recalling vehicles across the United States, including in Georgia, because of issues with the vehicles’ airbag inflators.*

The recall affects more than 155,000 vehicles around the United States. Part of the recall applies to Mazda CX-9s manufactured during the years 2014 and 2015 and sold or registered in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and Puerto Rico.

The vehicles are equipped with airbag inflators for the passenger seat airbag modules, and these inflators can potentially explode during a crash. The explosions are due to propellant degradation after long-term exposure to humidity and temperature cycling. Inflator explosions can cause metal shrapnel to be released into the vehicle cabin, injuring the driver or passengers.

Mazda is also recalling for inflator issues 2011 to 2013 Mazda 6s, 2011 to 2012 Mazda CX-7s, and 2011 to 2015 Mazda CX-9s sold or registered in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

In addition, Mazda is recalling for inflator issues 2010 to 2013 Mazda 6s, 2010 to 2012 Mazda CX-7s, and 2010 to 2015 CX-9s registered in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Mazda will notify owners of affected vehicles and will offer free replacement of the airbag inflators at local dealerships. The recall will begin in mid-November. Owners with questions can contact Mazda’s customer service at (800) 222-5500 and select Option 4. The recall number is 1317F.
