Fulton County Schools Showcasing Progress During School Bus Safety Week
FULTON COUNTY, GA. – October 22, 2018 (patch.com) The week of October 22 through October 26 is National School Bus Safety Week, according to an online news report on patch.com, and Fulton County Schools in Georgia is using the week to showcase its progress in the areas of bus safety and efficiency.*
The theme of this year’s National School Bus Safety Week is “My Driver – My Safety Hero.” Fulton Transportation Department Executive Director Sam Ham said the theme was appropriate because the school system’s drivers were highly focused on safety.
“Our drivers are well prepared to handle a school bus and also manage any student situation,” Ham said. “We do this by going above and beyond in our safety requirements through additional classroom and on-the-road training.”
Within just the Fulton County School System, about 800 school buses travel 50,000 miles every school day, carrying 79,000 students. In total, the Fulton buses travel more than 10 million miles a year, which equates to double the distance around the Earth. To prepare for this level of responsibility, every driver in the Fulton County system undergoes a criminal background check, an annual physical, CPR and first aid certification, and driving courses. They also are subject to random drug and alcohol screening and having their driving records reviewed every month.
During the safety week, students and parents in Fulton County will create handmade cards, posters, and treats for school bus drivers to show their gratitude and keep drivers motivated to remain safe.
“Children are our most precious cargo, and we will do everything possible to make sure they arrive to school ready to learn,” Ham said. “We invest in our Transportation employees so that they have the right training to keep our students safe on the road and are able to act in any situation.”
