Georgia Auto Dealer Discusses Teen Driver Safety Week

October 27, 2018

SMYRNA, GA. – October 22, 2018 (mdjonline.com) The week of October 21 is Teen Driver Safety Week, and in a Letter to the Editor, an auto dealer from Smyrna, Georgia, discusses the meaning of the week and tips for teens. The letter is posted online at mdjonline.com.*

Steve Ewing is the president and CEO of Wade Ford in Smyrna, Georgia, and he took the opportunity this week to discuss teen driving safety in a Letter to the Editor. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States.

In 2015, a total of 2,333 teens between the ages of 16 and 19 were killed in vehicle crashes in the United States. This equates to six teen deaths every day due to motor vehicle injuries. More than 235,000 teenagers of the same age were treated in emergency departments in 2016 for injuries sustained in motor vehicle crashes.

Ewing said some of the main tips teens can keep in mind include:

Buckle up.

“In a crash, a person not buckled up is much more likely to be injured or killed than someone wearing a seat belt,” Ewing wrote.

Drinking/Drugs and driving don’t mix.

“More than a third of all teen traffic fatalities involve alcohol,” Ewing said in his letter. “This should be obvious, but no excuses, no second chances, no alcohol and no drugs. Period.”

Avoid distractions.

“By setting a tough ‘no distractions’ rule for teens, young driver will keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road,” Ewing wrote. “According to the National Safety Council, distractions caused by passengers can be even more dangerous than texting and driving. Also not that, since July 1, 2018, it is now illegal to hold your phone while driving in the state of Georgia.”
