NHSTA Promoting New Vehicle Technology to Save Lives

October 22, 2018

UNITED STATES – October 16, 2018 ( The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has posted on its website information and answers to questions about new vehicle technology it is promoting to save lives.*

According to NHSTA’s website, almost 37,500 people in the United States died in motor vehicle crashes in 2016. The vast majority of these accidents can be attributed to human error. NHTSA believes one way to reduce traffic deaths in the country is to implement important technology into all automobiles sold in the U.S.

Some of the technology the Administration is promoting includes:

Automatic Emergency Braking Systems

Automatic emergency braking systems can detect an impending vehicle crash and apply the brakes of a vehicle or supplement a driver’s braking to avoid the crash or mitigate the resulting damage. NHSTA says it “believes these technologies represent the next wave of potentially significant advances in vehicle safety. The AEB systems’ engage dynamic brake support or crash imminent braking to potentially save lives and reduce moderate and less severe rear-end crashes that are common on our roadways.”

Rearview Video Systems (Backup Cameras)

A rearview video system, commonly referred to as a “backup camera,” allows drivers to see behind them when their vehicles are in reverse. The camera engages automatically when the vehicle is placed in reverse, and an image of the area behind the vehicle appears on the car’s interior screen. NHTSA describes this technology as a system that “helps prevent back-over crashes and protect our most vulnerable people — children and senior citizens.”

Descriptions of additional safety technology promoted by NHTSA can be found at the website linked above, including frequently asked questions about common and emerging safety systems for American vehicles.
