Child Passenger Safety Week a Success in Helping to Protect Kids on the Road
GEORGIA – October 16, 2018 (valdostadailytimes.com) The week of September 23 to September 29 was National Child Passenger Safety Week. According to an online news report from valdostadailytimes.com, safety officials in Georgia took advantage of the opportunity to help Georgians protect kids on the road.*
The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and its affiliates set up free safety events and car seat checks throughout the state during the week to provide resources and assistance to parents.
“It’s our job as parents and caregivers to make sure our precious cargo is as safe and secure as possible while we’re behind the wheel,” said Robert Hydrick, communications manager for the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “Even if you think your child’s seat is installed correctly, use Child Passenger Safety Week to get it double checked by a certified child passenger safety technician.”
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that two-thirds of all car seats are not properly installed. An appropriately fitted and installed car seat or booster seat can reduce the risk of death in a crash by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers. NHTSA recommends rear-facing car seats as long as possible, up to the maximum height and weight allowed per a car seat’s manufacturing guidelines. Children younger than 13 years of age should always ride in the back seat.
In 2015, 388 children ages 5 or older died in Georgia traffic accidents while unrestrained or improperly restrained in vehicles. The law in Georgia requires that all children ride in car seats or booster seats until the age of 8.
