Documentary “3 Seconds Behind the Wheel” Exposes Rampant Distracted Driving
October 9, 2018 (automoblog.net) An online article at automoblog.com discusses a new documentary that explores people’s driving habits and exposes rampant distracted driving.*
The documentary “3 Seconds Behind the Wheel” takes 55 minutes to show viewers blatant instances of distracted driving, including cell phone use, eating, and applying makeup. Three seconds is the average amount of time it takes someone to look at a text, select a song on their phone, or respond to a message. In this amount of time, a driver will cover the span of a football field.
Some of the more horrifying driving behaviors of people in the United States are exposed in the documentary, but the problem reaches well beyond America. A survey conducted in Australia found that 75 percent of Australians eat and drive, and 55 percent use their cell phones while driving. In addition, 25 percent of Australian women ages 25 to 34 said in the survey that they apply makeup while driving.
The European Transport Safety Council recently reported that surveys showed 36 percent of drivers in the Czech Republic used their cell phones while driving, and 25 percent of drivers in Spain and Ireland did, as well.
“We don’t have a distraction epidemic; We really have an attention epidemic,” said MIT research scientist Bryan Reimer. “I think that we really need to begin asking the question: ‘What is distraction?’ Could it be that the act of driving has become the distraction from the communication and infotainment world that we all live in?”
After showing pervasive distractions behind the wheel, the documentary goes on to explore the progressing world of autonomous technology and how self-driving vehicle developers purport to have the solution to the world’s driving problems.
