Georgia Sees Decrease in Traffic Crashes, Fatalities in 2018
ATLANTA, GA. – October 3, 2018 (wrbl.com) In 2018, Georgia has seen a decrease in the number of traffic crashes and traffic fatalities, according to an online news report from wrbl.com. The decrease follows implementation of Georgia’s new Hands-Free law.
On October 3, Representative John Carson (R-Marietta) announced that traffic fatalities, crashes, and insurance claims had declined in the state of Georgia.
“I am very pleased to see that Georgia drivers are incurring fewer crashes and fatalities,” Carson said. The Hands-Free Georgia Act was all about saving lives, and I believe that’s exactly what it is doing. I sincerely hope these life-saving trends continue for the benefit and safety of all Georgians and their families.”
As of September 30, traffic fatalities were down by 128 from 2017. The number of crashes overall was down 11 percent for the year, which represents the largest decrease in traffic accidents in Georgia in a decade. Georgia State Patrol shows that traffic crashes went down in the state right after implementation of the Hands-Free law at the beginning of July. Crashes declined by 2.5 percent in July and by 8.9 percent in August, compared with the same months in 2017.
In addition, insurance claims in the state have decreased. Quarterly claims are down in terms of both frequency and severity, a trend that began in the last two quarters of 2017. In the first quarter of 2018, crash frequency declined by 2 percent and severity declined by 1 percent, according to the insurance industry.
“Collision claim frequency and severity are declining for the first time in years,” said Robert Hartwig, Ph.D., CPCU, clinical professor of finance, risk management and insurance at the University of South Carolina. “Increased awareness of the consequences of distracted driving ahead of recent hands-free legislation is a likely factor.”
