GM Recalling 240,000 Vehicles Because of Brake Issues

September 17, 2018

UNITED STATES – September 12, 2018 (mlive.com) General Motors Co is recalling more than 240,000 vehicles in North America because of issues with the vehicles’ brakes. The story is online at mlive.com.

The recall affects the following GM vehicles, all from the years 2018 and 2019:

  • Buick LaCrosse
  • Cadillac XTS
  • GMC Terrain
  • Chevrolet Bolt
  • Chevrolet Cruze
  • Chevrolet Impala
  • Chevrolet Volt
  • Chevrolet Equinox
  • Chevrolet Malibu

The brake pistons in these vehicles are not properly chromed and tempered, according to recently released documents. The rear-brake caliper pistons therefore might contain trapped hydrogen gas that could be released into the brake systems. Trapped hydrogen can contact the brake fluid, which can release the gas into the vehicles’ brake systems. This can then reduce the performance of the vehicles’ brakes, increasing the odds of a crash. GM did not report whether any accidents or injuries have occurred because of braking issues.

Signs of the issue include a soft or spongy feeling when drivers press their brakes. GM will soon notify owners of affected vehicles, and owners will be able to take their vehicles to nearby dealerships to have any trapped gas removed. Any drivers who have experienced what they believe to be issues with their brake systems can also take their vehicles to dealers for diagnosis and repair.

To check whether your vehicle is subject to an active recall right now, you can visit the website for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. By entering your VIN in the website, you will receive information about current recalls and how to proceed to ensure your vehicle’s safety.
