Freelancers in Georgia Gain Opportunity for Short-Term Disability Insurance

GEORGIA – September 5, 2018 (entrepreneur.com) An online article from entrepreneur.com discusses the launch of a startup company that will offer short-term disability insurance to freelance workers in the state of Georgia.*

While freelance workers generally have a lot of flexibility in their work schedules, they have few allowances for sick days. Many freelancers don’t have health insurance, let alone short-term disability insurance. While a couple days wiped out by the flu won’t break the bank, a serious injury or illness could leave most freelancers in dire straits. 

A new company called Trupo is seeking to solve that problem. Later in September, the company will begin selling short-term disability insurance to freelancers in the state of Georgia. There are currently more than 200 Georgians on a waiting list for the insurance, and a broader launch will follow, along with additional markets. 

Trupo was formed from the Freelancers Union by founder Sara Horowitz. “The risk for freelancers, while it has always been about episodic income, is rough right now,” Horowitz said of the desire to create Trupo. “In particular, when something happens like a really bad injury or illness, freelancers, of course, aren’t eligible for unemployment insurance. They go into credit card debt or personal bankruptcy or have to give up independence and move back in with family. When we started listening to that, we said, ‘Wait a minute. There is a way we can probably start to collectivize this risk and solve this problem.’”

People who participate will pay in $27 to $51 a month and will be eligible to receive an average of $500 per week in the event of serious illness or injury. The physical activity required of a person’s job and a person’s weekly income will factor into how much that person is eligible to receive in short-term benefits. With the insurance, freelancers can receive 50 percent of their usual income per week (capped at $1,000) for one to 12 weeks.
