Georgia State Patrol Encourages Safe Driving During Labor Day Weekend

Troopers are urging people to use their best judgment during their holiday traveling and reminding them that law enforcement will be out looking for people violating laws on Georgia roadways. “Troopers will be on special Labor Day patrols for 78 hours straight,” said Col. Mark W. McDonough, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. “They will be keeping an eye out for speeders, drivers who text, and those posing a dangerous risk to other motorists on the road.”
The special Labor Day patrol McDonough discusses will take place from 6 p.m. Friday, August 31, to 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 3. During last year’s extended Labor Day patrol hours, Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol investigated 448 crashes involving injuries to 283 people. Four people died in those crashes. In addition, Troopers issued 8,412 citations and 11,562 warnings and made 249 arrests for driving under the influence during Labor Day weekend 2017.
Troopers say some of the best ways to stay safe during holiday traveling include observing posted speed limits, refraining from driving impaired, wearing seat belts at all times, eliminating distractions behind the wheel, ensuring all pets and children are never left inside cars, staying alert to surroundings, and showing common courtesy to other motorists and pedestrians on the roads.
As a reminder, Georgia’s Hands-Free Law is still in effect, and law enforcement officers will be watching for and ticketing people using handheld electronic devices. This does not include navigation, unless officers spot someone repeatedly pressing buttons on their phone or dash to set navigation.
