BMW Recalling More Than 300,000 Vehicles in Europe
GERMANY – August 7, 2018 (phys.org) According to an online news report from phys.org, German luxury automaker BMW is recalling more than 300,000 vehicles in Europe after reports of engine fires.*
The recall affects a total of 323,700 vehicles, 96,300 of which are located in Germany. Reports indicate a component that was designed to reduce emissions in some of BMW’s diesel vehicles is faulty and has been leading to numerous engine fires.
BMW has already recalled approximately 100,000 vehicles in South Korea because of the same engine fire issue. This recall was prompted by more than 30 reports of engine fires, mostly involving the BMW 520d sedan. South Korea has launched an investigation to determine why BMW delayed in recalling the cars after it knew about fire dangers. It is not clear if anyone has been injured as a result of the reported engine fires.
In a press conference in South Korea, BMW apologized for the issues and said a component called the exhaust gas recirculation cooler had been generating excessive sediment, causing engines to catch fire. BMW said the problem was “not Korea specific.”
“A similar rate [of failure] was observed in other jurisdictions,” said BMW’s vice president for quality, Johann Ebenbichler. Ebenbichler did not list which other countries had experienced problems with BMW’s vehicles, but now it has announced an additional recall affecting Europe. The same software and hardware was used in South Korea and Europe. It is not clear whether they were used in cars sold in America.
