Car Insurance Companies Work to Gain New Clients Through Better Technology

In an era of auto-replenishing household goods, binge-streaming movies and televisions shows, and instant ride-hailing through apps, the car insurance industry has been noticeably lagging in the technology department. And insurance companies know it.
“If you go to [an insurance] carrier’s website, the look and feel is pretty good, but the functionality is lacking,” said Tom Super, director of J.D. Power’s property and casualty insurance practice. J.D. Power conducted a 2018 Insurance Digital Experience Study, led by Super, to understand how effective car insurance companies were in their digital presence and how they could improve. Consumers today expect a clean and advanced experience on apps, Super says, much like they would receive when logging into Amazon, Netflix, or Uber.
Several insurance companies have taken the lead in trying to catch up to the technological present and attract more clients with well-designed, user-friendly features. Progressive has launched its “Snapshot” program that allows customers to receive discounts on their insurance by connecting their phones to their vehicles for monitoring driving behavior. The Progressive app collects driver data and provides cash back, gifts, or premium discounts based on how well people drive.
Other companies, like Liberty Mutual and Allstate, have started working out deals with Amazon, whereby the voice assistant Alexa will provide specialized information when consumers ask for quotes or questions about car insurance. Allstate has taken this further to allow its customers access to bill amounts, reminders, and claims statuses through Alexa.
In addition, Esurance has implemented a system for damage appraisals and claims handling through use of video. Clients can start claims in the company’s app, upload video right from their phone, and receive a much faster estimate.
