Study: August is the Most Dangerous Month of the Year for Driving

July 30, 2018

July 25, 2018 (prnewswire.com) According to an online news report on prnewswire.com, the month of August is the most dangerous time for driving in the United States.

Information gathered by insurance company Nationwide shows that more deadly vehicle accidents occur during August than any other month of the year. In fact, in August 2016, more vehicle accidents occurred (60,976) than in any other month during the previous four years. A total of 15,914 people died during the month of August in the years 2012 through 2016, which makes it consistently the deadliest month of the year.

Looking at the years 2012 through 2016, August 2 appears to be the deadliest day of the year. More people in the United States died in vehicle accidents on this date than any other day of the year during the five-year period.

Nationwide’s data indicates three factors lead to most vehicle accidents around the country: hard braking, sudden acceleration, and time spent idling (sitting in congested traffic). In Georgia, hard braking and time spent idling play the largest roles. Drivers in Georgia spent 15.8 percent of their time driving during August 2017 idling in traffic. Congested conditions like this increase the likelihood of sudden stops, road rage, reckless driving, and collisions.

The hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays show the most instances of aggressive driving during each week. Drivers tend to perform more hard braking and fast accelerations during these hours on Fridays, which lead to more accidents.

Teresa Scharn, Associate Vice President of Nationwide, said the company has gathered this information about driver behavior contributing to vehicle accidents in an effort to educate the public and reduce crashes. “When drivers are armed with this information, they can make necessary adjustments to their driving behaviors that will help them be safer drivers,” Scharn said.
