Talking to Your Teens About Driving Safety to Protect Their Lives
Our attorneys discuss the reasons why teenagers are more prone to vehicle accidents — especially during the summer — and how to talk to your teenagers about driving safety, based on current reports.
Out of all age groups of drivers, 16-year-old drivers have the highest crash rates. During the summer, 16-year-olds and other young drivers have an even higher probability of being involved in vehicle accidents. Below are some reasons teens are more prone to accidents and some ways parents can talk to their teens about driving safety.
Experience – Driving experience comes with time, so younger drivers are naturally less experienced than older drivers. Especially during bouts of inclement weather, inexperienced drivers might not know how to react behind the wheel. Parents should teach their teens about the dangers of driving in inclement weather and about what to do when weather strikes.
Distractions – About 60 percent of American teens say they talk on their phones while driving. Both talking and texting on a phone behind the wheel dramatically increase the likelihood of a serious crash. Parents should inform their children about Georgia’s new Hands-Free Law so they know it is now illegal to use all handheld devices while driving in Georgia. Knowledge of this law can help kids put the phones away.
Recklessness – Many teens speed and drive recklessly on the roads. A teenager’s crash risk increases incrementally with each mile per hour driven over the speed limit. Also, most teen crashes occur during the nighttime hours. Parents should encourage their teens to always obey speed limits and use extra caution at night.
