Georgia Highway Sets Example for Environmentally Friendly Road Projects

July 17, 2018

GEORGIA – July 17, 2018 (usnews.com) A highway in Georgia is setting an example for efficient land use and environmentally friendly road projects. The story is reported by usnews.com.*

In 2014, Georgia’s Ray C. Anderson Memorial Highway was dedicated in memory of Ray Anderson, founder of Interface Inc., a state carpet manufacturer. Anderson was touted as the “greenest CEO in America” because of his continuing efforts to make his company environmentally sustainable. Today, the highway honors Anderson’s environmental endeavors by implementing numerous sustainable projects along the 18-mile corridor of Interstate 85.

The highway sits upon 250 acres of land that organizers, including Anderson’s daughter, are dedicated to using in ways that benefit the Georgia environment. On the shoulder of the Ray C. Anderson Highway, Kernza wheat grows with deep roots that help retain clean water and trap carbon. The roadway’s drainage ditches are filled with native vegetation to capture pollutants from rainstorms, and a large pollinator garden in the corridor provides habitat for butterflies and bees.

At the I-85 visitor center in West Point, Georgia, guests will find a solar-powered charging station, a solar-paved roadway, and an advanced tire pressure system for improving road safety. The highway’s working organization, called The Ray, partners with the Georgia Department of Transportation to continually innovate safety strategies and environmentally friendly projects for the highway. The next big projects for The Ray include a new solar farm on the highway’s shoulder with a pollinator meadow ground cover and an autonomous vehicle pilot.

The Ray has attracted widespread attention around the county, playing host to the Central Florida Expressway Authority and the Missouri Federal Highway Administration.
