Brooks County Sheriff’s Officer Suffers Minor Injuries in Vehicle Accident on Highway 84

BROOKS COUNTY, GA. – June 15, 2018 (valdostadailytimes.com) According to an online report from valdostadailytimes.com, a Brooks County Sheriff’s Deputy suffered minor injuries after being involved in a vehicle accident June 15 on Highway 84.*

Reports indicate a Brooks County Sheriff’s deputy was parked along the side of Ga. Highway 84 while working radar when a Chevrolet pickup truck slammed into the back of his patrol car. The deputy, who has not been identified, was transported to South Georgia Medical center with injuries to his back and neck. The injuries were reportedly minor, and he was released a few hours later, according to Brooks County Chief Deputy J.B. Wheeler. 

The driver of the pickup was reportedly not injured. He told authorities that he lost control of his truck before crashing into the deputy’s car. The patrol car was totaled and towed away from the scene. Georgia State Patrol is continuing to investigate the accident and has not yet released additional information. Troopers have not indicated whether the pickup driver will be cited. 

Brooks County is located on the southern border of the state of Georgia. The county sees relatively few vehicle accidents each year, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. In 2012, a total of 208 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, which resulted in 93 injuries and two deaths. 

Unlike numbers in the majority of the state, vehicle accident totals in Brooks County dropped in the years after 2012. However in 2016, the number of accidents in the county jumped sharply from 133 in 2015 to 355. These accidents resulted in 90 injuries and four deaths.
