Driving Safety Tips for Summer Vacation Season

June 12, 2018

June 8, 2018 (baltimore.cbslocal.com) As reported by baltimore.cbslocal.com, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is reminding summer vacationers to practice safe driving.

The months of July and August are the highest for fatality accidents all year, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, with U.S. traffic deaths reaching an average of 116 a day during those months. Many of these accidents can be attributed to increases in traffic because of vacation travelers who are driving in unfamiliar areas.

While setting out for your vacation this summer, keep these safety tips in mind to protect yourself and your family:

  • Check your tires. Worn tires do not have adequate traction and can lead to accidents, especially during inclement weather. Your treads should be higher than one-eighth of an inch, and you should check them throughout your vacation traveling. Be sure to also check your tire pressure.
  •
  • Refresh yourself on rainy driving safety. Rainy weather can often lead to accidents on highways and interstates. Remember how you should react if your car begins to hydroplane — do not hit the brakes, and gently continue steering in the direction you want to go. Also remember to remove cruise control if it is raining.
  •
  • Use extra caution in construction zones. Summer travelers frequently encounter construction sites, as vacation season and construction season overlap. Read road signs carefully, and pay attention to your surroundings. Be sure to slow down and eliminate all distractions in work zones.

With a safe vehicle and safe driving practices, you can ensure your vacation travels are a success this summer.
