NHTSA Urges Floridians to Respond to Takata Recalls Due to Increased Danger in State
FLORIDA – June 7, 2018 (nhtsa.gov) In a press release on nhtsa.gov, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) points out the increased risk of Takata air bag explosions in Florida and urges residents to immediately seek repairs to recalled vehicles.
Takata air bags have been the subject of the largest vehicle recall in United States history. The air bags contain a defect that can cause them to explode, particularly in hot, humid climates. The explosions can send metal shrapnel into car interiors, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants. Three Floridians have died because of Takata air bag explosions, and federal officials are now indicating Florida residents face greater danger of explosions because of the state’s hot, humid weather.
NHTSA reports 23 deaths and more than 300 injuries can be attributed to Takata air bag explosions worldwide, and South Florida is one of the highest risk areas in the United States. NHTSA Deputy Administrator Heidi King said in the press release she was “deeply concerned” about the number of unrepaired air bags in South Florida, adding she could not “stress enough the urgency of this recall.”
King also held a press conference June 7 at Broward College in Florida to raise awareness about the importance of seeking immediate repairs. Florida ranks third in the country for unrepaired Takata air bags, having more than 1.4 million vehicles still on the road with defective air bags. Certain recalled vehicles are on a “do not drive” warning because of the air bag defects, including 2006 Ford Rangers and Mazda B-Series trucks.
