Crash, Injury, and Fatality Data for the State of Georgia

GEORGIA – June 7, 2018 (gahighwaysafety.org) The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has compiled vehicle crash, injury, and fatality data in the state of Georgia through the year 2016. The information is published on the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety website, gahighwaysafety.org.*

According to GOHS, the number of serious vehicle accident injuries in Georgia has increased at an unsteady rate from 2010 to 2016. In 2016, people were seriously injured in vehicle accidents in the state at a rate of 15.55 per every 100 million miles traveled. The number of serious injuries has generally been trending upward in Georgia, though data shows a 6 percent drop between 2015 and 2016. During 2015, the serious injury rate was 16.46 per every 100 million miles traveled in the state.

The most recent data available is for the year 2016, during which a total of 1,554 traffic fatalities occurred in Georgia. The GOHS has broken down the traffic accident fatality data for 2016 as follows:

  • 603 fatality accidents occurred in rural areas of the state
  • 951 occurred in urban areas of the state
  • 857 fatality accidents were single-vehicle 
  • 476 victims were not wearing seat belts
  • 172 victims were motorcyclists 
  • 188 victims were age 21 or younger 
  • 232 victims were pedestrians
  • 29 victims were bicyclists 
  • 266 fatality accidents involved speeding
  • 368 fatality accidents involved alcohol consumption 
  • 402 fatality accidents involved rollovers
  • 179 fatality accidents involved large trucks
