Georgia State Patrol Releases May 2018 Accident Reports and Statistics in city of Valdosta, Georgia

June 05, 2018

VALDOSTA, GA. – June 4, 2018 (valdostatoday.com) According to an online story from valdostatoday.com, the Georgia State Patrol has now released its May 2018 report regarding crashes and citations in the state of Georgia. Reporters at Valdosta Today broke down the stats for the city of Valdosta, Georgia.

In May 2018, Troopers with Post #31 of the Georgia State Patrol in Valdosta, Georgia, investigated 111 traffic accidents that resulted in 44 injuries and two fatalities. Additionally during May 2018, Post #31 Troopers saw the following:

  • 827 total traffic citations
  • 29 arrests for Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
  • 121 citations for seat belt violations (all drivers and passengers in Georgia must use seat belts, including drivers and occupants of pickup trucks)
  • 33 citations for child restraint violations (children must be in booster or child safety seats in Georgia until age 8)
  • 24 citations for distracted driving (eating, texting, reading, etc. while driving)
  • 394 citations for speeding
  • 16 arrests for drug possession or possession of drug paraphernalia
  • 1143 warnings issued for various violations or dangerous driving

In releasing the May report, the Georgia State Patrol reminds drivers that beginning July 1, they will no longer be able to use hand-held electronic devices while driving. Georgia’s new Hands-Free Law bans drivers from using cell phones and electronic devices while not in hands-free mode. The only exceptions are for navigation and emergency phone calls.

Troopers plan to give drivers a short grace period (likely 90 days or less) to learn about the law and adjust. Many drivers will receive warnings and education about the new law if caught holding their phones or devices shortly after the law goes into effect. But after the grace period ends, penalties begin at one point on a driver’s license and a $50 fine for the first offense.
