Do Electric Cars Have a Defect That Result in More Accidents Than Petroleum Powered Cars?
June 4, 2018 (cleantechnica.com) An online report from cleantechnica.com explores the accident potential and insurance hurdles associated with today’s electric cars.
A large insurance agency in Norway, Gjensidige, says that hybrid and electric cars are involved in more vehicle accidents than conventional cars. In looking at vehicle accidents in Norway from 2012 and 2017, the company found that electric and hybrid cars were involved in 20 percent more accidents and sustained damage that was 50 percent more expensive to repair. The company faults Norway’s tax incentives on electric cars and the higher torque and horsepower in electric cars for the rise in accidents involving these vehicles.
Conventional cars have a gradual increase in power and speed, but electric cars jump to life right when drivers touch the accelerators. Gjensidige says many people are not able to handle this increase in power, especially in heavy city traffic situations. Many experts in Norway disagree that electric cars have a higher potential for accidents, saying that while people must be careful, they can get to know the cars and drive just as safely as they would in conventional cars.
Aside from accidents themselves, electric vehicles can be more expensive to insure. The Tesla Model S electric car is the most expensive motor vehicle to insure in America, according to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It will cost a Tesla Model S owner almost $1,800 to insure the vehicle, and any repairs will cost the owner a substantial sum of money, as well. The next-most expensive vehicle to insure in the U.S. is the Mercedes S Class sedan, costing a little more than $1,500.
