Takata Agrees to $7M Settlement with Hawaii Over Faulty Airbags

May 24, 2018

HAWAII – May 16, 2018 (bigislandnow.com) According to an online news report from bigislandnow.com, Takata has agreed to pay $7 million to settle a lawsuit with several entities, including the State of Hawaii, because of its faulty airbags.

The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs announced a settlement between Takata, Hawaii, New Mexico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands in the amount of $7 million. The settlement resolves a lawsuit these entities brought against the airbag manufacturer, alleging that it acted unlawfully in marketing and selling its airbags to automakers. Hawaii will receive the largest portion of the settlement — $3 million.

Takata airbags are prone to explosions, especially in hot and humid climates, like those of the entities that have sued the manufacturer. Airbag explosions have caused serious injuries to many people, including deaths. More than 40 million vehicles have been recalled in the United States because of the airbags, and Takata has entered into a $1 billion plea agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice regarding its conduct surrounding the airbags. Some information indicates Takata knew for a decade about the dangerous condition of its airbags. In June 2017, the corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It is not clear how the corporation will meet its liabilities.

Hawaii and other states are continuing to sue vehicle manufacturers for their roles in airbag injuries. Currently, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Ford are the most targeted manufacturers in connection with the airbag issues. In the meantime, owners and lessees of recalled vehicles are urged to address the issues with their airbags, as they can present serious risks to drivers and passengers.
