Federal Agency Investigating Recent Tesla Crash in South Jordan Utah
SOUTH JORDAN, UT. – May 16, 2018 (sfgate.com) As reported by sfgate.com, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is launching an investigation into the Tesla crash that occurred May 11 in South Jordan, Utah.
NHTSA has sent a team of investigators to look into the crash, which involved a 28-year-old female driver using the Autopilot feature of her Tesla Model S. The Tesla collided with a fire truck stopped at a red light on South Bangerter Highway in South Jordan, Utah. The driver reportedly admitted she was using her cell phone at the time of the crash, and preliminary investigation from Tesla indicates she had her hands off the wheel prior to the collision.
In recovering data from the vehicle, Tesla was able to determine that the driver engaged Autosteer and Traffic Aware Cruise Control and took her hands off the wheel more than a dozen times during the driving cycle. She placed her hands back on the steering wheel only after visual alerts from the vehicle, and she again removed them after a few seconds each time. The Tesla was traveling at 60 mph at the time of the accident, which is the speed the driver set, and her hands had been off the steering wheel for 80 seconds before the crash.
Federal agencies are investigating several recent accidents involving Tesla vehicles and the car company’s semiautonomous driving features. Most notably, the National Transportation Safety Board is looking into an accident that occurred in March in which a man using Autopilot crashed his Tesla Model X into a concrete divider on a California highway. The driver died in the collision.
Tesla continues to impress upon drivers that Autopilot is only semiautonomous and requires full and constant attention by vehicle drivers.
