European Union Passes Mandatory Vehicle Safety Measures
May 18, 2018 (theweek.co.uk) As reported by theweek.co.uk, the EU Commission will require 11 new safety features to be installed on all new automobiles starting in 2021.*
The Commission passed the mandatory safety features in an effort to improve road safety. The new rules, which require features like autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and driver-fatigue monitors, are expected to save more than 7,000 lives and prevent almost 40,000 serious injuries between 2020 and 2030.
Autonomous emergency braking alone could reduce rear-end collisions by almost 40 percent, studies show. The braking system will perceive obstacles in the road and automatically stop the vehicle if the driver is not reacting to the obstacle. Back-up cameras are also one of the 11 new requirements (a standard feature in most U.S. vehicles today), and they are projected to save nearly 100 lives a year.
The majority of the new safety mandates are welcome additions, but one is creating some controversy. Intelligent speed assistance, which scans road signs and adjusts driver speed, could be overreaching by the government, critics say. Some members of the public believe this feature is a step toward complete governance of vehicle functions.
The full list of requirements includes:
- Advanced emergency braking
- Alcohol interlock installation facilitation
- Drowsiness and attention detection
- Event data recorder
- Emergency stop signal
- Full-width front occupant protection crash test with improved seatbelts
- Head impact zone enlargement for pedestrians and cyclists
- Intelligent speed assistance
- Lane-keeping assistance
- Pole side impact occupant protection
- Reverse cameras and detection system
These features will all be required in vehicle models 2021 and newer.
