Self-Driving Cars are Coming to Ohio with Governor John Kasich’s Blessing

May 22, 2018

OHIO- The newswheel.com reports that John Kasich is ignoring the hesitancy seen in other states following the self-driving car-pedestrian fatality last month in Arizona and is pushing ahead with plans to start testing autonomous cars on Ohio’s roads.

In Arizona, self-driving cars were approved for use on the road, but only when a person was present in the vehicle to serve as a backup. Autonomous cars in Ohio will be allowed on the road, even without anyone there to monitor them. These vehicles will be allowed access to all public roads.

The issue of self-driving vehicles becoming a common sight on the road is not a matter of, but when. And despite the tragic accident in Arizona, most people agree that self-driving cars will actually be safer than cars driven by humans. Kasich is taking a gamble on the technology and hoping to put his state in the position to be at the forefront of the industry changes. Ohio will now join the short-list of states that are embracing autonomous vehicles, along with Michigan, Florida, Arizona, and California.

Any argument over the risks presented by self-driving technology must be weighed against the massive death toll faced be drunk drivers and distracted drivers. The amount of car accidents caused by humans making mistakes is over 90%. Kasich understands the real risk of fallible human drivers on a personal level as both of his parents were killed in a collision with a drunk driver in 1987. Whether or not Kasich’s personal experiences have influenced his stance on autonomous cars, he has plenty of data to back up his position, and autonomous vehicles seem to be all but inevitable anyway. As Kasich puts it, his state is “ready to roll.”
