Most States’ Auto Insurance Companies Significantly Increase Rates After One Claim

May 08, 2018

May 3, 2018 ( According to an online report from, auto insurance companies in most states in the U.S. sharply raise premiums after customers file just one claim. Companies in some states raise rates by more than 60 percent after one claim.*

In advertising for car insurance, companies try to sell themselves as hassle-free, easy-to-use, and customer-friendly. However, recent data paints a different picture. When customers file just one claim, they can see their insurance rates more than double in many states. According to data analysis, the following five states have the highest annual premium increases after filing one auto insurance claim of $2,000 or more:

  • New Hampshire – Rates increase by 65.9 percent after one claim
  • California – Rates increase by 63.2 percent
  • Rhode Island – Rates increase by 61.7 percent
  • Massachusetts – Rates increase by 60.9 percent
  • Iowa – Rates increase by 56.5 percent

Conversely, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, Oklahoma, and West Virginia had the lowest percentage rate increases after one claim. Kentucky’s rate increase was the lowest of all 50 states and the District of Columbia, coming in at 19.4 percent. West Virginia’s rate increase was the fifth-lowest at 27.8 percent.

The state of Georgia fell somewhere near the top, with rates increasing between 50 and 60 percent after one filed claim. On average, annual premiums in the state of Georgia will increase by $428 when customers file a claim.

On a national scale, the average driver pays $841 a year for auto insurance. In many states, like New Jersey, New York, and Florida, customers start out paying premiums much higher than the national average — $1,100 to $1,250 a year. When they actually use their insurance and file a claim, their rates go from bad to worse. Rate increases seem to be one more reason to drive safely.
