Georgia Governor Signs Distracted Driving Bill May 2, 2018

May 02, 2018

STATESBORO, GA. – May 2, 2018 (accessatlanta.com) (WJBF) Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed a distracted driving bill into law today in Statesboro, Georgia.

The Hands-Free Georgia Act makes it illegal to hold your phone or other electronic devices while driving. The Act expands upon an existing state law that bans texting while driving, making it illegal to use your cell phone or any electronic devices when not in hands-free mode.

Drivers will still be able to use their cell phones or devices in their cars, as long as they use Bluetooth, SYNC, or other hands-free technology. However, drivers caught holding or balancing their phones with their bodies (such as between the cheek and shoulder) will be cited for violating the new law. Citations will start at $50 and increase based on the number of violations a driver has received.

Gov. Deal is signing the Act May 2 in Statesboro, Georgia, which is the home of Georgia Southern University and the site of a wreck that killed five Georgia Southern nursing students. In 2015, a tractor-trailer driver was using his cell phone while traveling on Interstate 16 and ran into the back of a line of cars. Five nursing students in the preceding vehicles died in the wreck.

Gov. Deal signed the Act during a ceremony attended by the families of those students. The parents of Emily Clark, one of the students who died, said they are glad to see something positive come from a horrific situation. The Hands-Free Georgia Act is not a hostile act by the government, Gov. Deal said, but is intended to protect the safety of people on Georgia roads.
