Georgia Towing Company Raising Awareness of Move-Over Law
AMERICUS, GA. – April 30, 2018 (wrbl.com) According to an online report from wrbl.com, the manager of an Americus-based towing company is working to raise awareness of Georgia’s Move-Over law.
Like many other states, Georgia has what is called a “Move-Over” law that requires motorists to slow down and move to the far lane when passing an emergency vehicle on the side of the road. The law has been in place for some time, but law enforcement officers and towing companies say it seems like drivers are not aware of it.
Because of the close calls he has had and witnessed on the job, Curt Peacock is taking it upon himself to increase awareness of the law and try to save lives. In so doing, he hosted the American Spirit Ride on April 28. Peacock is a fourth-generation manager and truck operator of Peacock Towing in Americus, Georgia. During his years working with the family business, he has personally experienced several near-misses in which drivers almost hit him while he was working on the side of a road. During one incident, he had to jump onto the back of his truck to avoid being hit.
Per the law, if moving over is not possible, motorists are supposed to slow down and drive with caution. They are not legally required to move over for non-emergency vehicles, but law enforcement encourage people to do so no matter who is pulled over. Peacock says drivers should not just trust themselves to avoid a collision right next to emergency vehicles. Following the law and moving over a lane is always the safest action, he says.
