Philadelphia Streets Department Improving Trash Truck Safety to Lower Accidents
PHILADELPHIA, PA. – April 25, 2018 (phillyvoice.com) The Philadelphia Streets Department is taking steps to lower bicyclist and pedestrian accidents on its roads by outfitting new trash trucks with improved safety measures. The announcement is covered in an online report from phillyvoice.com.
Philadelphia reportedly has one of the highest rates of fatality traffic accidents. Every year, about 250 people are injured and 100 die in vehicle accidents in the city. Many of those injuries and fatalities are caused by trash compactor trucks on the roads. To improve safety inside the city, the Streets Department will ensure that every new truck it buys will have several 360-degree-view cameras equipped with night vision, side guards for the trucks, and enlarged side mirrors.
The trash truck upgrades are part of a larger initiative in the city to decrease traffic accidents and deaths, called the 2017 Vision Zero plan. Through implementation of its three-year plan, the city hopes to make its fleet of 6,000 vehicles safer and protect citizens and visitors from traffic accidents involving the vehicles.
The effort is in part prompted by the tragic death of a 24-year-old bicyclist that occurred in Philadelphia in November 2017 and involved a garbage truck. The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia responded strongly to the incident and demanded change, including seven measures to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety within the city.
However, the city’s movement will only solve part of the problem, as many truck accidents in the city involve privately-owned vehicles, not city-owned vehicles. The city is considering setting a deadline for private companies to implement enhanced safety features on their trucks, as well.
