Takata Airbag Inflator Saga Not Over Yet

According to a news article on CarAdvice.com, the massive recall involving Takata airbag inflators just got even bigger. Mitsubishi Australia just recalled 2003-2008 Mitsubishi Lancers and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions because those vehicles contain the Takata airbag inflators that have proven to be dangerous and even deadly. The recent recall by Mitsubishi Australia added over thirty-five thousand cars to the list of vehicles affected by the Takata airbag inflator recall, which already included over a hundred million automobiles manufactured by various automakers.

The vehicle component that caused the recall is an airbag inflator manufactured by Takata. Over time, the propellant in the inflators can get degraded by humidity and high temperatures. If a vehicle that has deteriorated propellant in its airbag inflator gets into an accident, metal fragments can shoot into the vehicle cabin when the airbag deploys, injuring or killing vehicle occupants. To get the unsafe airbag inflators out of the vehicles that were manufactured with them, the owners of affected vehicles can have the airbag inflators in their cars replaced by a safer airbag inflator.

If you got a notice about the Takata airbag recall from the manufacturer of your vehicle, contact them to make arrangements for the replacement of the defective part. If your vehicle is covered by this recent addition to the recall effort, contact your local Mitsubishi dealer. The recall is mandatory, and your safety is at risk every day that you continue to drive your vehicle with the defective airbag inflator in place. Manufacturers also face penalties for failure to comply with the recall, because the potential for death or severe injury is likely if the vehicles containing the defective inflators are not replaced.
