Driver Fatigue Imperils Bus Passengers
Georgia Bus Accident Lawyers Address Safety Concerns
A major bus line operating across the U.S. finds itself defending one of its drivers who needlessly endangered a bus loaded with nearly helpless passengers. Passengers on a Greyhound Bus traveling from Phoenix, AZ to Dallas, TX begged their female driver to pull over to get some rest after the passengers determined the driver suffered from substantial fatigue and could not drive safely. Fortunately, this 20-hour bus ride ended safely. Other overnight bus trips have ended in tragedy, however, costing people their lives.
Montlick & Associates, Attorneys at Law, proudly represents the people of Georgia whose lives were irrevocably scarred by the negligence and recklessness of bus companies. We relentlessly pursue justice on behalf of our clients who have suffered catastrophic, life-altering injuries, and the families of those who were killed bus crashes.
When you get on a bus, airplane, or cruise ship, you surrender your freedom and place your lives in the hands of those entrusted to deliver you safely to your destination and back. Tragedy strikes when that trust is misplaced. The passengers on the Greyhound bus traveling from Phoenix to Dallas took matters into their own hands to save their lives. Passengers awoke to the sensation of the bus leaning. Upon coming to, the passengers figured out that the bus was swerving and crossing the center line on the road. They begged the female driver to pull the bus over and implored her to get some rest. The driver refused. Passengers indicated that they were scared and asked the driver to stop because children were on-board. Still, she refused.
In the end, the passengers reported the incident to law enforcement who caught up with the bus and guided it to the side of the road safely. Greyhound sent another driver to complete the trip, and the passengers arrived intact, if not a little shaken.
This is not the first incident involving Greyhound and a fatigued driver. In 2016, CNN reported that 37% of all motor coach crashes involved tired drivers. The investigation conducted by CNN revealed that Greyhound Bus imposes a duty upon their drivers to combat fatigue by stopping every 150 miles. The company instructs their drivers to get out, stretch, check the tires and lugs, and get some fresh air. The monotony of driving lulls the drivers to sleep. Lawsuits for personal injuries and wrongful death against Greyhound revealed that the company fails to follow the rules it put in place.
One accident injured 20 people and killed another when the driver fell asleep at the wheel. Among the seriously injured on this ill-fated trip, an 18-year-old aspiring opera singer was on her way home when that bus crashed. The impact crushed her vertebrae in her neck and injured her voice box. She lost her voice.
