The Importance of Healthy Tires and Accident Prevention
Georgia Car Accident Attorney Discusses the Importance of Healthy Tires and Accident Prevention
A car's tires are an extremely important component that helps to ensure a car is safe to operate. While we all know we should check our tires periodically, many drivers do not do so. Tires wear over time and often need to be rotated and evaluated to ensure there is no damage or that can pose a risk to both the driver and others on our streets and highways. Tires are just as important as breaks, but because breaks are used more aggressively than tires, some drivers are more concerned with brake wear than they should be relative to tires.
Additionally, many people may not realize just how much tires can play a role in the functioning of the rest of the car. For example, worn-out tires may make it difficult to break or steer a vehicle. This is true not only for passenger cars but also for large tractor-trailers which need the ability to break more so than other vehicles, given the sheer weight of a tractor-trailer. When a tire is worn out, it is at risk of exploding or being punctured, which can then cause a car to behave erratically in such a way that an accident occurs.
What to Look Out for on Your Tires
There are a variety of signs all drivers should look for when evaluating a vehicle’s tires. Regardless of whether the vehicle is a passenger car, crossover, SUV, pickup truck, motorcycle or tractor-trailer, among others, it is critical to ensure tires are evaluated regularly to identify warning signs that include the following:
- Worn tread on the edges of the tire;
- Nails or other sharp metal objects stuck in a tire (it is not uncommon for drivers to have nails in their tires without even knowing it, as nails will sometimes keep the tire sealed so that air does not leak);
- Uneven wear and tear;
- Underinflation of tire pressure;
- Overinflation of tire pressure; and
- Flat or bald spots on the tires, demonstrating that there is little or no traction left.
Tires play more of a role in accidents than many people realize. For example, an underinflated tire can cause a driver to lose control, which can lead to an accident that may involve serious injury. Therefore, taking basic precautionary steps to ensure your tires are safe can mean life-and-death both for you, passengers, and others on our Georgia streets and highways.
