Accident Attorneys Discuss Atlanta-area Fatal Hit-And-Run Accidents

August 05, 2017

Law enforcement officers from East Point arrested a Comcast-Xfinity contractor recently on allegations of motor vehicle homicide and fatal hit-and-run. The cable television contractor was involved in an accident on July 17. In another incident, DeKalb County law enforcement officers arrested a 34-year-old man for driving away from a fatal accident. If you or someone you love suffered personal injuries in a hit-and-run accident, contact Montlick & Associates to learn about your legal rights and options.

The fatal accident involving the television cable contractor occurred around 3:30 a.m. on July 17, 2017. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the victim of the hit-and-run was standing on the sidewalk on Camp Creek Parkway. The cable contractor was operating a company van at the time of the crash, which hopped the curb and ran over the victim.  However, the van driver claimed he was not working nor was he on a company call when he struck the victim.

The police investigation revealed surveillance video captured the accident. Initially, police suspected that the driver of the van was intoxicated. A close examination of the surveillance video revealed that the van driver was looking out of the window and driving slowly when the van drove onto the curb. East Point police said that the van driver sped up just after contacting the victim.

Without the surveillance video, the police may not have solved this crime. Based on the surveillance video, East Point police were looking for a van bearing Comcast-Xfinity logos. Consequently, police sought the assistance of the television company to help identify whether the van was driven by an employee or a contractor. A tip from a fellow employee lead the police to the person whom they ultimately apprehended and charged with the crime.

The case remains under investigation. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will perform forensic analysis on the van to determine whether any evidence of the accident remains.

On Saturday, July 22, 2017, a young man between the ages of 18 and 23 was killed by a hit-and-run driver. The fatal crash occurred in DeKalb County on Snapfinger Woods and Shell Bark Road, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The police have not identified the victim of the accident to date. The case remains under investigation. However, police did indicate that the man they charged was located outside of DeKalb County. Additionally, police stated that the man had warrants for his arrest from outside of Georgia. Police did not say what charges are associated with the out-of-state warrants.

What Can You Do If You Are Involved In A Hit-And-Run Accident?

You can take a few steps to help identify a hit-and-run driver in the immediate aftermath of a car crash. Above all, make sure that you and your passengers receive emergency care. To the extent you are able, get as much information can about the car and the driver. Additionally, call the police and report everything you saw over the phone. Also, the dispatcher might have additional questions for you to help them identify who ran from your accident. Remember that few people leave the scene of an accident for no reason. However, hit-and-run drivers do so to conceal their identity.
