Fiat Chrysler Recall Popular Brand Of Pickup Trucks

May 17, 2017

Fiat Chrysler, the makers of the Dodge Ram pickup trucks, have announced they are recalling 1.25 million trucks worldwide, according to Reuters. Fiat Chrysler believes that software issues in the vehicle caused one death and two injuries from defective safety equipment in the trucks. The software error disables the passenger side air bag and fails to remove the slack of the seatbelt. Pretension on the seatbelt takes up slack in the seatbelt during a traumatic event. If you own a Dodge truck, you should contact the dealership at which you purchased the vehicle to learn what you should do to have the recalled items repaired or replaced before more people are killed or injured.

Fiat Chrysler's technicians understand how to repair the recall. They will reprogram the computer modules to eliminate the code error creating the dangerous condition. The automaker stated that the computer modules might fail in the truck is involved in a rollover crash. According to the company, the computer error will only occur during a particular series of events, which commences with undercarriage impact that causes a rollover. Fiat Chrysler has indicated that rollovers caused by striking debris on the road or while driving off-road are the only incidents in which the computer will fail.

To this point, Fiat Chrysler has not conceded that the computer glitch caused the one fatal accident and two injuries. Notwithstanding, the automaker is proactively performing recall maintenance out of an abundance of caution. Fiat Chrysler will start the recall process in June of 2017. They suggest to owners of the soon-to-be-recalled trucks to turn the engine on and off to reset the code if a problem occurs before the repairs are finished.

The recall will apply to:

• 1.02 million 2013-2016 model year Dodge Ram 1500 and 2500 pickup trucks, and Dodge Ram 3500 pickup trucks with model years 2014-2015 in the United States;
• 216,007 Dodge Ram pickup trucks in Canada,
• 21,668 Dodge Ram pickup trucks in Mexico, and
• 21,530 Dodge Ram pickups outside of North America.

The problem came to light when the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) learned that the estate of a decedent filed a products liability lawsuit alleging airbag failure in a rollover crash involving a 2014 Dodge Ram. The NHTSA commenced an investigation. The NHTSA started an investigation into the issue potentially fatal problem.

Fiat Chrysler is not the only U.S. automaker facing recalls due to faulty software. General Motors recalled 4.3 million vehicles from across the globe for a similar issue. The GM vehicles experienced a software defect that lead to one death and three injuries when the vehicles' airbags failed to deploy. The failure was linked to a software problem. GM issued that recall in September 2016 after an NHTSA investigation.

This latest recall is not Fiat Chrysler's only encounter with the NHTSA. The NHTSA fined Fiat Chrysler $70 million in December of 2015 for non-compliance with crash reporting obligations since or about 2003. In July of 2015, the company against suffered a financial penalty when the NHTSA found that the company mishandled 11 million vehicle recall repairs. The NHTSA fined Fiat Chrysler $105 million. Furthermore, the company agreed to three years of monitoring by a former Transportation Secretary for the United States.
