Alcohol-Related Accident in North Georgia Kills Man and Two Young Children from Monroe County
Anytime someone is injured or killed as a result of an accident, the hardship can seem unbearable and endless. However, when young children are injured or killed, it can be even worse. Two young former Monroe County children have suffered a fate that no child or parent should experience. Both children were siblings, and both tragically lost their lives in an accident that should never have happened.
The accident occurred in northern Georgia when a 51-year-old man was driving a van on Highway 136 in Walker County, according to a local news report. A 5-year-old child was sitting in the backseat of the van, and the 10-year-old sibling was sitting in the front passenger seat. The accident took place when the 51-year-old driver lost control of the van, pushing him on the shoulder of the highway where he later struck a tree. The impact of collision sadly killed the 51-year-old man and the 5-year-old child. The 10-year-old sibling initially survived the accident, but later perished at a children's hospital.
Both the driver and the 5-year-old child were not wearing seatbelts. Additionally, the child was not secured in a booster seat, and in Georgia, any child under the age of eight must be secured in a booster seat. However, he was trapped in the car and had to be "cut out" before he could be taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Was Alcohol to Blame?
It is too early to determine if the 51-year-old man (who was the fiancé of the siblings' mother) was under the influence of alcohol at the time this accident occurred. However, the Georgia State Patrol indicated that a cooler of beer and open containers were found on the floor of the van. While the early details may lead many people to infer that the 51-year-old man was under the influence of alcohol at the time this accident occurred, there are other factors aside from alcohol that may have contributed to the accident. Only a thorough investigation can determine if this accident was preventable and if anything could have been done to reduce or eliminate the risk of fatal injuries to the man and two children.
