Caution - The Holidays Can Bring Out the Worst Drivers
The Holidays Can Bring Out the Worst Drivers. So which State Has the Worst Holiday Drivers?
It is no secret that nearly every state in the nation experiences an increase in the number of traffic injury and traffic fatality crashes around the holiday season. It is unclear precisely why this happens: perhaps the increase in the number of cars on the roadway make it statistically more likely that a car crash will occur during this time of year. Or, perhaps the stress of the holidays โ the need to visit distant family members or a "to-do" list that does not seem to end โ affects and distracts a great number of drivers. Whatever the reason, however, it is clear that when driving across Georgia, in the Southeast, or elsewhere in the United States during this holiday season, drivers need to be alert and drive safely.
Several South and Southeastern States Have Some of the Nation's Worst Drivers
The admonition to drive safely is especially applicable to travelers driving through Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, and South Carolina โ according to a new study, which was reported in USA Today, conducted by CarInsuranceComparison.com that utilized data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these states have some of the highest incidence rates for drivers who engage in drunk driving, careless driving and speeding, failing to wear safety belts, and failing to obey traffic control devices and signs. These states also have some of the highest numbers of fatalities per 100 million miles driven in the country.
Other states that featured prominently in the study included:
- Georgia, which featured in the top 40;
- Florida, which featured in the top 30; and
- Mississippi, which featured in the top 20.
What Benefit is There to These Studies?
It seems studies like these are published with some regularity; however, the value of these studies may not be readily apparent to the average driver. After all, there is nothing you can do about the fact that the car next to you has a Louisiana license plate or the driver in front of you is talking on his or her phone. This study and others like it, however, can serve the beneficial purpose of making you a more aware and observant driver. For example, you yourself may not text while driving but a study such as this (which indicates drivers from a certain area may not exercise as much care as drivers from another region) can be a reminder of the need to be aware of your surroundings while traveling. While you cannot control another driver's actions, your own swift and appropriate reaction to dangerous driving can mean the difference between your safety and another holiday-related crash.
