Loss of Four Young Girls Following Fatal Memorial Day Accident

June 25, 2016

A Florida mother is coping with the tragic loss of four of her five daughters following a horrific single-vehicle accident that happened on Memorial Day. The crash occurred when the left front tire of the mother's Dodge Durango separated from the SUV. The tire separation caused the vehicle to flip, ejecting many of the 11 occupants from the vehicle, including a toddler who was found on the other side of a 30-foot barrier near the crash site. The toddler, who is not the mother's child, is lucky to be alive after being ejected so far from the vehicle.

Authorities say that while some occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat belts, some were not. Three of the mother's four daughters were killed instantly at the scene of the accident, and the fourth daughter died a few days later after being treated at a nearby hospital. The impact this accident has had on the mother is significant, as she is now left with one of her four daughters.

What Went Wrong?

It is too early to determine the cause of this single-vehicle accident. Authorities say that there are no pending criminal charges against the mother, and it will take time to get to the bottom of what went wrong. There are also many potential contributing factors that may have played a role in this single-vehicle accident, including, but not limited to:

• Tire failure (tread separation, improper tire installation, underinflated tires, and overinflated tires, among others);
• Speeding;
• Inattention; and
• Driving under the influence.

It is important to keep in mind that these are simply potential factors that must be investigated, and it could turn out that these factors did not play a role at all. This is also why it is important to consult with an attorney if you believe someone else is at fault for causing an accident that resulted in your injuries or those of a loved one. An attorney can help to investigate the accident further in addition to the standard police investigation. In the particular accident discussed above, it is unclear whether or not the mother is at fault for causing the accident. If tire failure played a role, there may not have been anything the mother could do. The fact that some occupants were allegedly not wearing seat belts is unfortunate, but the specific facts of this are not yet known.
