Augusta Car Accident Claims Life of Four Year Old

December 04, 2015

Recently, a catastrophic accident claimed the life of a toddler. The car accident occurred in Augusta on Claudia Drive. Deputies report that a woman from Hephzibah ran a stop sign, hitting a Ford Explorer driven by a 30 year old and carrying a four year old child. Tragically, the young girl was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Investigators report that the four year old was not in a child safety seat and there were three other unrestrained children in the vehicle. The driver is now facing charges for vehicular homicide in the second degree, failure to stop at a stop sign, and violation of a learners permit.

Neighbors expressed dismay at the loss of this little girl too soon. They report that the intersection of Claudia Drive and Lumpkin Road is notorious for speeding. Even with markings denoting the accident now present, cars are not slowing down. This is not the first fatal accident to occur near the intersection and residents worry that it will not be the last.

Accidents Caused by Running Stop Signs Among the Most Serious

Drivers will often experience a false sense of security when approaching a stop sign, but you are never safe in an intersection as other drivers might not obey the stop sign and serious accidents can result. Stop sign accidents are among the most serious and unfortunately common of all car accidents.

Drivers often run stop signs out of impatience. People can be in a hurry or simply assume that no one is coming rushing through the intersection. Often, these drivers run stop signs without even realizing they did so until it is too late. At times drivers are distracted or reckless, they will likely engage in other negligent acts, such as unsafe lane changes, running red lights, and more.

Law enforcement officers attempt to pull over as many people as possible who run stop signs, but there are only a certain number of officers on patrol at any given time. Law enforcement is unable to stop all law breaking drivers and stop sign accidents will sadly continue.

To prevent fatal crashes at stop signs, always come to a complete stop at a stop sign. Count to three after stopping and check closely in each direction, not just left and right, but also the street across from you. While accidents can occur at any time, doing your best to prevent an accident can help to keep you safe.
