Driver Caught on Camera Driving Wrong Way in HOV Lane

September 23, 2015

Recently, video emerged of a wrong way driver in Washington State. The video appeared on Reddit and depicts a vehicle traveling for some time in the wrong direction in the HOV lane. Timestamps show the incident as occurring on Thursday, July 30. Washington State Patrol officers have responded to the video, stating it is fortunate that no one was injured. Several months ago, a driver tragically died after she headed the wrong way on the roadway and collided head-on with another vehicle.

Wrong Way Driving Can Result in Serious Accidents

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reports that wrong way accidents do not occur often, but when they do, fatal or serious injuries are highly likely. One of the most common causes of wrong way accidents is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Driving while intoxicated can cause drivers to become disoriented and confused, which can result in bizarre or negligent behavior, such as traveling on the wrong side of the roadway.

There are numerous other factors that can cause a wrong way crash. Poorly marked highway entrances can confuse drivers and send even the most vigilant of drivers heading the wrong way down the highway. All cities with a high number of wrong way drivers should consider whether their signage is sufficient to ensure drivers will not enter a road traveling in the wrong direction.

Other causes include road construction, which can disrupt traffic flow and similarly confuse drivers. Poor lighting explains why most wrong way accidents happen at night, and drivers unfamiliar with the area are most likely to travel the wrong way. Tired drivers have also been known to head in the wrong direction due to general fatigue clouding their judgment.

To prevent wrong way accidents, drivers should never drink and drive. Before driving, make sure you are well-rested and have a clear understanding of the route to your destination. GPS devices can help drivers avoid heading the wrong way, but should not be blindly followed because of the fact that some GPS devices have been known to possess technical errors or out of date maps. Stay vigilant and read all road signs thoroughly before merging or turning. Turn on your brights if you cannot make out a sign and also stop for directions if you are unsure of the way to proceed. The victims of a wrong way accident are urged to consult with an attorney as soon as possible.  A skilled and knowledgeable personal injury attorney can evaluate the circumstances of your case and also take the necessary steps to protect your rights.
