Tire Blowout May Have Caused Deadly Accident on Turnpike

August 22, 2015

Safe tires are a critical component to all vehicles, no matter what the size. When a tire is unsafe, for any reason at all, both the driver, any passengers and other people sharing the road are at risk of being injured or killed. Regular tire maintenance is crucial to ensure tires are operating on your vehicle as they should. A recent Florida accident was yet another example of how a potential tire blowout or lost tire, proved to be deadly. According to a local news report, a son and father were tragically killed when driving on the Florida Turnpike when a tire on their car either blew out, or simply fell off the car, causing the vehicle to cross the median and flip over. Three other individuals suffered injuries, but fortunately, they survived the accident.

Tire Blowouts Occur All Too Often

Most of us can agree that maintaining a vehicle is not cheap. Tires can cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, depending on the type of vehicle the tires are for, and the type of tire that is desired. Many people can choose to continue driving a vehicle even if a tire does not feel right. It is also likely that some people may not even be aware that one of the tires on their vehicle is not in good condition. Reasons why tire blowouts and why tires simply fall off vehicles include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Under or over-inflated tires;
  • Worn out tire tread;
  • Failure to have tires inspected each year;
  • Having the wrong size of tire on a vehicle;
  • Having a tire improperly placed or installed on a vehicle; and
  • Driving with a tire that has a slow leak.

An accident involving a tire blowout can occur at any given time for any of the reasons listed above, among many others. For example, if a driver strikes a pothole, and if the tires are in poor condition, those tires are at risk for blowing out or falling off of the car. Likewise, if a tire is overinflated, but otherwise in good condition, that tire can blowout at any time merely if the pressure simply becomes too much.

Whatever the reason may be for a tire to blowout, it is the type of situation that can be prevented so long as the tires on a vehicle remain in a safe condition. Anyone who has suffered injuries or lost a loved one due to an accident involving a tire blowout already knows just how devastating the consequences can be. An experienced accident attorney may be able to provide you with the insight you need if you wish to discuss your injuries and your possible legal options.
