Hit and Run Accident Victim Completed Peachtree Road Race with Prosthetic Leg
In a display of bravery and triumph, a local man who lost his leg after a hit and run motorcycle accident participated in this year's Peachtree Road Race on a prosthetic leg. The 48 year old accident survivor from Carrollton had previously completed the race in a wheelchair. For the first time, he completed the 26.2 mile course on a prosthetic leg.
While he expected to experience some discomfort in the race, it must have paled in comparison to what he had already survived and overcome. Two years ago, the Carrollton man was riding his motorcycle when the driver of a pickup truck turned left in front of him. His motorcycle flipped over the pickup and tossed across the highway. The accident placed him in a coma and his wife painfully decided to allow doctors to amputate his badly injured right leg. Miraculously, he woke up.
Amputations Resulting from Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Accidents
The loss of a limb or a digit in a car, truck, or motorcycle accident is known as an amputation. Amputation is less common than some other motor vehicle injuries, but when this serious injury occurs, it creates a lifelong and permanent disability for survivors.
According to the National Limb Loss Resource Center, there are nearly two million people living with limb loss across the United States. Trauma, which can include traffic accidents, accounts for 45 percent of all amputations. Approximately 185,000 amputations are performed each year, equating to hospital costs of over $8.3 billion.
A traffic accident can cause the victim's arms, legs, fingers, toes, or hands to be so severely damaged that reconstruction is simply not an option. At times, the limb is severed in the crash. Other times, surgical amputation is necessary to prevent further damage or save the crash victim's life.
Anyone who has suffered an amputation due to a car, truck, or motorcycle accident should seek legal assistance as soon as possible. This injury can result in massive medical bills, lost time from work, permanent disability, and ongoing care needs. Your attorney can assist you in obtaining compensation for your loss due to the negligent driver responsible for the accident.
