Safety Experts Ask Autonomous Truck Manufacturers How Their Trucks Will Handle Tire Blowouts

December 20, 2022

Tire blowouts generate hundreds of fatal traffic accidents and tens of thousands of crashes every year. The federal Fatal Accident Recording System reports that tire blowouts accounted for more than 300 deaths from 2010 to 2020. Safety experts are asking autonomous truck manufacturers how their self-driving vehicles will regain control after a tire blowout and there is no human driver behind the steering wheel. Autonomous vehicle experts think that tire sensor technology and preventative maintenance might solve this issue.

One of the primary causes of tire blowouts is underinflated tires. This is because underinflated tires generate a lot more friction, which creates more heat, leading to a blowout. Experienced truck drivers have the skill and training to bring their trucks under control during a tire blowout. But can self-driving vehicles stop safely during a tire blowout?

When a truck tire explodes, it's the truck driver who detects a problem with the tires. The trucker will try to safely move their truck into the breakdown lane. If self-driving trucks do not have a truck driver, there is no one to feel a tire blowout, creating dangerous conditions for other motorists.

Don Burnette, CEO of Kodiak Robotics, stated that machine learning and sensor redundancy could not apply the brake pedal in this situation or handle the issue of the vehicle's tires not responding due to a blowout. Kodiak Robotics and tire manufacturer Bridgestone Americas are trying to develop communication data that can be translated into more promising tire safety technology.

Tire manufacturer Goodyear is working on a unique tire pressure monitoring system. Goodyear's tire pressure monitoring system uses a predictive algorithm technology that anticipates when a tire is likely to have a blowout. No matter how sophisticated sensors become, there is nothing better than a human inspection of the truck tires before taking a trip.

If you or a member of your family has been harmed by a self-driving vehicle, you might be eligible to file a claim to recover monetary damages. Time is limited, so call
