Connecticut Firefighters Use 25,000 Gallons of Water to Extinguish Tesla Vehicle Fire

September 26, 2022

According to an online news report published on breitbart.com, another Tesla burst into flames, causing serious issues for firefighters who were trying to extinguish the vehicle.

The report states that the fire required more than 25,000 gallons of water to get the fire under control. Now, fire departments are recognizing that electric motor vehicles that catch on fire pose a substantial danger and need specialized training to put the electric vehicle fires out.

First responders are receiving special training to put out electric vehicle fires caused by accidents. These fires are a growing problem throughout the U.S. According to experts, these vehicles burn significantly hotter and often throw a 2,000-degree torch-like flame.

According to the Stamford Fire Department, the Tesla EV fire in Connecticut required three times the amount of effort and water to extinguish. The vehicle's batteries had fallen out of the EV and onto the ground, which helped firefighters better access the battery. However, the fire still needed more than 600 gallons of water a minute to quell the blaze.

Deputy Chief Eric Lorenz reported that other fire departments have experienced the same issues and that using large amounts of water is the only solution to put out EV battery fires. Five hours following the initial fire incident report, the Stamford Fire Hazmat Team, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and a private company that specializes in hazardous waste disposal showed up on the scene to take the Tesla. Deputy Chief Lorenz said that these fires are not routine and they require special handling. There have been no injuries reported, and the fire's cause is under investigation.
