2020-2022 Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride Vehicles Can Spontaneously Combust

August 25, 2022

Affected Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicle owners are urged to park their vehicles outside due to spontaneous combustion issues. The vehicles should be parked outside until they have been repaired.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Kia America and Hyundai Motor America are urging affected owners of certain 2020-2022 Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade to park their affected vehicles outside and away from homes and other structures due to a risk of fire.

The automakers also initiated a "stop sale" in accordance with federal regulations.

The auto manufacturers also initiated recalls affecting 245,030 2020-2022 Hyundai Palisade vehicles and 36,417 2020-2022 Kia Telluride vehicles. The issue concerns an accessory tow hitch sold at dealerships that can permit moisture into the harness module leading to an electrical short circuit. The electrical short can start a vehicle fire while parked and turned off or while driving.

Hyundai and Kia dealers will inspect the tow hitch module and remove its fuse, if necessary. There is no interim repair available for the affected vehicles. The fix is still under development. As soon as a repair is available, all affected owners will be contacted by mail with instructions on how to have their vehicles repaired at a Hyundai or Kia dealer.

You can also check your vehicle for a recall by visiting NHTSA.gov/recalls and entering your vehicle's 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN). Car owners may also download NHTSA's SaferCar app, and receive push notifications when a recall is issued.
