NHTSA Initiates its Labor Day' Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' Safety Campaign

August 24, 2022

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the agency has begun its annual "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" Labor Day safety campaign. The $13 million media campaign used a media mix of digital, radio, billboards, social media, and television to familiarize drivers about the hazards of drunk and drugged driving. Along with the marketing campaign, law enforcement officers will be patroling their communities from August 19 until September 6 to stop impaired driving. The initiative includes several public service messages, including If You Feel Different, You Drive Different; Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over; Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over, and Drive High, Get a DUI.

The NHTSA Administrator, Dr. Steven Cliff, reported that the NHTSA met with representatives from the National Sheriffs' Association, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility (Responsibility.org), and the TEAM Coalition. The organizations want to help make sure everyone to makes it home safely during the holiday weekend. Dr. Cliff stated that there is no excuse for driving drunk or impaired.

NHTSA crash data reveals that nearly 12,000 people died in accidents caused by alcohol-impaired drivers. 67% of those accidents involved drivers with blood alcohol levels of at least 0.15%. In 2020, one person was tragically killed in an alcohol-related crash every 45 minutes. The

NHTSA is asking drivers to plan ahead and never drive high on alcohol, marijuana, or any other drugs.

Law enforcement is asking the public to report suspected drunk drivers to 911. Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal in all fifty U.S. states, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.
